OptinMonster makes it easy to control where and how your campaign appears to visitors with Display Rules. Each page can have different types of campaigns, with different content and exclusive offers.

In this article, you’ll learn how the Display Rules work to control when and where your OptinMonster campaign will appear.

This general guide provides an overview of all available Display Rule options. Some targeting options included in this guide are available only with specific subscription plans.

Before you start, we use specific terms related to the Display Rules that are helpful to become familiar with. A Rule contains a condition that allows or prevents a campaign from appearing. A Ruleset is a group of Rules. You can create multiple Rulesets with completely different Rules, if desired.

If you are using WordPress, we recommend you also review how the Output Settings of the OptinMonster WordPress plugin work to further control the appearance of your campaign.

Display Rules View

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you’ll want to customize when and where it appears to visitors.

To get started, select a campaign to edit in the campaign builder and navigate to the Display Rules view:

Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Rulesets

Rulesets are organized in the left sidebar. A Ruleset is a collection of Rules and each Ruleset acts independently from others. As long as all conditions in a single Ruleset are met your campaign can be shown to visitors even if another Ruleset’s conditions have not been met. Learn more about Rulesets here.

Rulesets in the Display Rules of the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Rules

Rules are organized in the right pane. Rules are unique conditions that control when and where the campaign can appear on your site.

When adding groups of Rules to your campaign you can control if all or only one condition in the group needs to be met by toggling the option at the top of the group section.

Choose if all or any one of the rules in a group should be required for your OptinMonster campaign.

For each individual Rule, you’ll find the option to duplicate, disable/enable, or delete the condition on the right-hand side.

Copy, toggle the visibility, or delete an individual Rule.

In the bottom toolbar of the Display Rules, you can tab between Conditions, Actions, and Summary for an individual Ruleset:

Display Rules footer options allow you to configure the Conditions and Actions.

Conditions

The Conditions tab is where you add the rules that will need to be met before the campaign can appear.

At the top of the Conditions tab, you’ll find the option to choose the campaign View (Yes/No, Optin, or Success) to show when the rules are met, and buttons for using the Saved Rulesets feature:

Configure the conditions for your Ruleset.

Below that is where you’ll add individual Rules to control where and when the campaign can appear:

Add individual Rules to control where and how your OptinMonster campaign will appear to visitors on your website.

Actions

The Actions tab is where you control what should happen when the conditions of the Ruleset are met. This includes setting MonsterEffects and MonsterSounds, and for Inline-type campaigns the option to configure Content Locking.

Configure the Actions of your campaign in the Display Rules.

The Actions tab is also where you’ll control how often the campaign should reappear to the same visitor using cookies, and for Inline-type campaigns the Smart Success option.

Summary

The Summary tab is where you can view a summary of the individual Ruleset you have selected.

FAQs

Why am I seeing warnings when setting up some Display Rules?

We’ve added helpful warnings in the campaign builder to help ensure your Display Rules are set up correctly. These warnings will appear when you use rules, or a combination of rules, in a way that will not work.

With these warnings, you can avoid frustration and ensure that your campaigns are set up correctly.

Here are some cases where these warnings may appear:

  • Adding the “Time on page is no more than…” or “Time on site is no more than…” as the only rule. This rule by itself won’t trigger your campaign. It needs to be combined with other rules to define when the campaign should be displayed.
  • Adding the InactivitySensor and Exit-Intent rules using the “ALL” option in the same ruleset. It’s important to note that a user cannot be both inactive and exiting the page at the same time. As a result, this rule will never pass, and the campaign will not trigger.

Troubleshooting

I’m using the OptinMonster WordPress plugin but my campaign isn’t showing where it should with the Display Rules I’ve configured.

When using the OptinMonster WordPress plugin, it’s possible to configure the Output Settings in the plugin in a way that conflicts with the Display Rules.

The Output Settings control where the campaign’s embed code is added to your site.

The Display Rules, in the campaign builder, control where your campaign has permission to appear as long as the embed code is also present.

For example, if you have the Display Rules set to show the campaign on the homepage of the site, and the Output Settings configured to embed the campaign only on a page that is not the homepage, the campaign would not be able to appear because those conditions conflict.

You may need to modify the Output Settings and/or the Display Rules to resolve the issue.

Unsure how to resolve this issue? Please reach out to our support team, we would be delighted to assist!

My campaign is showing on pages it should not, why?

This can happen when adding multiple URL Path conditions if they are incorrectly combined.

Within each Ruleset, you can combine multiple conditions using OR as well as AND statements, to require only one condition in the rule or all conditions in the set.

Choose if all or any one of the rules in a group should be required for your OptinMonster campaign.

Most Display Rules can be configured as either inclusionary or exclusionary, and using the correct AND/OR statement to combine them is important to ensure your campaign appears as you expect.

  • Inclusionary rules are including a specific condition using terms like “exactly matches”, “contains”, “starts with”, “ends with”, etc. These should be combined using the ANY ONE option, which is equivalent to OR statements:
Configure inclusionary rules in OptinMonster to target specific pages with campaigns.
  • Exclusionary rules are excluding a specific condition using terms like “does not exactly match”, “does not contain”, “does not start with”, “does not end with”, etc. These should be added using the ALL option, which is equivalent to AND statements, like this:
Configure exclusionary rules in OptinMonster to prevent campaigns from showing on specific pages.

We recommend using the Live Site Inspector testing tool when configuring Display Rules to help identify any issues early on. You can also reach out to support for assistance, we’re delighted to help!

OptinMonster makes it easy to use, manage, and save Rulesets to quickly apply Display Rules to new campaigns. This allows you to easily configure conditions for where and how your campaign should appear to visitors.

In this article, you’ll learn how to use and manage Rulesets, including Saved Rulesets.

Before you start, we use specific terms related to Rulesets that are helpful to become familiar with.

  • A Rule contains a condition that allows or prevents a campaign from appearing.
  • A Ruleset is a group of Rules. You can create multiple Rulesets with completely different Rules if desired.
  • Saved Rulesets are user-created, custom Rulesets that you can save and import to easily apply a set of Rules. Saved Rulesets are especially helpful when you wish to quickly apply the same Rules to multiple campaigns in your account.

Each Ruleset is evaluated on its own, independent of any other Rulesets. As long as the conditions within an individual Ruleset are true, the campaign will be allowed to appear.

Rulesets

Add a Ruleset

To add a new Ruleset, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Each campaign starts with a Default Ruleset that you can customize. To add an additional Rulesets, select the Add New Ruleset button from the left sidebar.
Add a Ruleset to your OptinMonster campaign.
  3. Enter a name for your new Ruleset in the field provided, then select the checkmark icon to save the Ruleset.
    Save new ruleset.
  4. Your new Ruleset will appear as list item in the left sidebar. The currently-selected Ruleset will display (editing) next to its name.
    Editing ruleset indicator.

Rename or Delete a Ruleset

To rename or delete a Ruleset, hover over the name of the Ruleset and select the pencil icon to edit, or the trash icon to delete. When deleting a Ruleset a popup modal will appear asking you to confirm the action.

Rename or delete ruleset.

Note:

Each campaign must have at least one Ruleset. If your campaign only has one Ruleset, you will not be able to delete it until you create a new Ruleset.

Saved Rulesets

Create a Saved Ruleset

To create a new Saved Ruleset, follow these steps:

  1. In the Display Rules view of the campaign builder, click the Edit button for the Ruleset you would like to save.
    Edit Ruleset
  2. If you wish to modify the Ruleset conditions in any way before saving do so now.
  3. When you are ready to save the Ruleset, click the Save Ruleset button.
    Save Ruleset
  4. A popup modal will open where you can give your Saved Ruleset a unique Title and add custom notes. When you’re done filling out the details of your Saved Ruleset, click the Save Ruleset button.

    Manage Rulesets

Import a Saved Ruleset

To import a Saved Ruleset into a new campaign, follow these steps:

  1. In the Display Rules view of the campaign builder, click the Edit button from the Display Rules Summary view.
    Edit Ruleset
  2. Next, click the Import Ruleset button.
    Import Ruleset
  3. A popup modal will appear with all of your saved Rulesets. Locate the Ruleset you would like to import and click the import option Add as NewAdd to Existing, or Replace Existing.
    Import Ruleset Options in OptinMonster

    • Add to Existing – Import the Ruleset and add to the existing conditions of the Ruleset you are currently editing.
    • Replace Existing – Import the Ruleset and replace all existing conditions of the Ruleset you are currently editing.
  4. When you’re finished, Save your campaign.

Managing Saved Rulesets

To manage existing Saved Rulesets, follow these steps:

  1. In the Display Rules view of the campaign builder, select the Manage button from the left sidebar.
    Manage Rulesets in OptinMonster
  2. The Manage Rulesets popup modal will open where you can Rename, Duplicate, or Delete any Saved Rulesets.
    Edit Ruleset Options

IMPORTANT:

Deleting a Saved Ruleset will remove the Ruleset from your OptinMonster account completely, for you and all sub-account users. Any campaigns using the deleted Ruleset will retain their display rules, but the deleted Ruleset will not be able to be imported to any future campaigns. You will need to recreate and resave the Ruleset to import it into campaigns.

If you would like to simply remove any rule(s) found in a Ruleset from a particular campaign, click the trash can icon next to the individual display rule(s) to remove.

FAQs

Can I bulk-apply a Saved Ruleset to multiple campaigns at one time?

It’s not possible to bulk-apply settings, including Saved Rulesets, to multiple campaigns at this time. You’ll need to edit each individual campaign to apply the Saved Ruleset(s) you wish to use.

OptinMonster makes it easy to show or hide your campaigns on specific pages using our Display Rules.

In this article, you’ll learn how to show or hide your campaigns on specific pages.

Before you start, targeting campaigns by URL Path is included with all subscription plans.

The URL path is a specific portion of a web page’s URL, but not the full URL. The URL path is the text after the domain and before any query arguments or anchors.
URL Structure

This article includes the following examples:

  • Show a campaign only on specific language pages when using the WordPress Multilingual (WPML) plugin
  • Display a campaign when the URL matches a specific pattern using RegEx

Configure Display Rules

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you may want to show or hide it on specific pages of your site. This is easy to do using OptinMonster’s Display Rules.

To show or hide your campaign on specific pages using the URL path, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, when adding or editing a rule select Where (Targeting) from the left-hand list and select the Page Targeting option.

The following options are available for current URL path:
    • is any page
    • is the homepage
    • is not the homepage
    • exactly matches
    • does not exactly match
    • contains
    • does not contain
    • starts with
    • does not start with
    • ends with
    • does not end with
    • matches the pattern
  4. You can quickly add more URL Path conditions by selecting the (+) icon to the right.
    Add more URL Path conditions.
  5. Control if the conditions in the group must ALL be required, or only a single condition needs to be met by toggling the ANY/ALL option above the group.
Configure the group conditions to be all required or only one.
  6. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Examples

Some example configurations are provided below to help get you started.

Show a campaign only on specific language pages when using the WordPress Multilingual (WPML) plugin.

The WordPress Multilingual (WPML) plugin makes it very easy to target campaigns based on the specific language being viewed using the Page Targeting rule in OptinMonster.

The WPML plugin will use a prefix in the URL Path to indicate the language, for example ‘en’ for English, ‘es’ for Spanish, ‘fr’ for French, etc.

To show a campaign only on English pages of your site you would add a Page Targeting condition, ‘current URL Path starts with en’.  Like this:

WPML url path targeting example in OptinMonster.
Display When the URL Matches a Specific Pattern Using RegEx

You can set a rule to show a campaign only on URLs that match a specific pattern using a Regular Expression, or RegEx for short.

“A regular expression is a pattern that the regular expression engine attempts to match in input text. A pattern consists of one or more character literals, operators, or constructs.” – Microsoft

In simpler terms, RegEx looks for characters: be it letters, numbers, or specific symbols to identify a pattern. The results permitted or revoked depend on whether the Input to the Regular Expression Engine matches the pattern being employed by the engine.

For more information about how to set and use display rules in OptinMonster, please refer to our Display Rules guide. You can also check out our RegEx pattern matching guide for comprehensive details on creating and using RegEx patterns.

Troubleshooting

When adding a path to the page targeting field, I’m getting a message that says ‘Unnecessary URL components have been removed’

Depending on your setup, the Page Targeting rule cannot be used to target any part of a URL that comes after a ‘?’ or a “#’ in the URL path, such as ‘website.com/page?key=value’, or ‘website.com/page#heading’ since these are URL parameters and anchor tags, respectively.

Instead, you will need to use the specific rules for targeting URL parameters and the rules for targeting anchor tags.

When using the OptinMonster WordPress plugin, you can configure the Output Settings to control where your campaigns appear on the site. This option expands the functionality of our Display Rules to give you even more powerful targeting.

In this article, you’ll learn how to use the OptinMonster WordPress plugin’s Output Settings to control where your campaigns appear.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

Output Settings

To configure the Output Settings for your OptinMonster campaign, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the WordPress admin of your site.
  2. Next, navigate to the OptinMonster > Campaigns screen.
Navigate to the OptinMonster srcset= Campaigns screen in the WordPress admin of your site.”>
  3. From the Campaigns screen, locate the campaign you wish to configure and select the Output Settings link.
Select the Output Settings link for the campaign you wish to configure.
  4. The Output Settings screen will look similar to the following for any popup type campaign (e.g. Lightbox, Fullscreen, Floating Bar, Slide-in).
Output Settings screen in the OptinMonster WordPress plugin.

WordPress Output Settings

On the left, you’ll find the Output Settings options. If you are using the MailPoet plugin on your site, that option to save leads will appear first. If you are configuring an Inline type campaign the Automatic or Manual embed options will appear next.

Advanced Settings

The Advanced Settings options allow you to limit where your campaign is embedded on the site if you wish to do so. If no option is configured in this panel, the campaign will be embedded on all pages of your site by default, and only the Display Rules configured in the app will control where your campaign appears on the site.

All options are connected with OR statements, meaning if any of the conditions configured is true, the campaign will be embedded there.

If you have connected the WooCommerce plugin with OptinMonster you will also see options in this panel for targeting WooCommerce-specific templates.

Visibility & Status

On the right, you’ll find options to Show the campaign only to visitors who are logged in or logged out of your site.

You’ll also find the option to change the Publish status of the campaign within WordPress.

Display Rules Summary

In this section on the right, you’ll find a summary of the Display Rules you’ve configured within the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Because the Output Settings and Display Rules control different functions, it’s possible to configure them in a way that conflicts and prevents the campaign from appearing. This summary is provided to assist in configuring your campaign so you can easily ensure both settings work together to accomplish your targeting goals.

FAQs

What’s the difference between the Output Settings in the plugin and the Display Rules in the app?

The Output Settings of the WordPress plugin control where the campaign’s embed code is added to your site.

The Display Rules in the app control where the campaign has permission to appear if the embed code is also on the same page.

If you do not configure any settings in the Output Settings, the campaign’s embed code will be added to the entire site when published, and only the Display Rules will control how the campaign can appear to visitors.

As an example, if you configure the Output Settings to add the campaign’s embed code only to the homepage of your site and configure the Display Rules in the app to load the campaign on any page except the homepage, the campaign would never appear to any visitors because the two conditions conflict. The embed code has only been added to the homepage, and the Display Rules do not give the campaign permission to appear on the homepage.

What is the point of the Output Settings if I can control where the campaign appears using the Display Rules?

Some targeting options can be accomplished more quickly and within the Output Settings of the campaign, which the Output Settings in the plugin make very easy.

For example, if you wish to load a campaign on all single blog posts but the Permalink settings do not add any identifying information to the URL, the Display Rules would be unable to effectively target those posts on your site. However, you can use the Output Settings to accomplish this targeting by toggling Single Posts like this:

Single Posts targeting in the Output Settings of the OptinMonster WordPress plugin

Troubleshooting

I’ve published the campaign through the OptinMonster app, but it’s not showing up on my WordPress site.

The most common reasons a campaign may not appear include the following:

  • A cookie has been set in your browser from previously testing the campaign. Please try testing from a new Incognito window to see if that resolves the issue.
  • Site caching needs to be cleared. If you’re using a plugin or server-side caching, clear the site cache to see if that resolves the issue.
  • Not Published in the OptinMonster WordPress plugin yet. Be sure you’ve also updated the publish status through the OptinMonster WordPress plugin.
This can be done from the Output Settings screen:
Change the campaign publish status from the Output Settings screen.
Or from the OptinMonster > Campaigns screen.
Change the campaign publish status from the Campaigns screen in WordPress.

By default any campaign that is not mobile-only optimized will show on all devices.

You can create Mobile-only optimized campaigns with a Pro or higher subscription.

Important:

If you are editing a mobile-only optimized campaign there will be no option to add a Device Targeting Display Rule. This is because mobile-only optimized campaigns are designed to show only on mobile phones.

This article covers specific settings in the Display Rules. If you’re just getting started we recommend reading our general Display Rule documentation first.

Configure Device Targeting

You can use the device targeting rule in the Display Rules to show or hide your campaign on specific devices.

To target your campaign to specific devices, follow these steps:

  1. In the campaign builder, navigate to the Display Rules view.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, add or modify an existing rule, by searching for Visitor’s Device.

    Configure the Visitor's Device rule.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

FAQs

How do I target just mobile phones but not tablets?

The Mobile option targets mobile phones only.

Yes, MonsterLinks will always work and are the one exception to the device rule.

Why don’t I have the Device Targeting options in the Display Rules?

If your campaign is a Mobile-only campaign, no device targeting options will appear in the Display Rules. This is because Mobile-only campaigns will show on mobile phones by default with no option to change the device.

You can convert a Mobile-only campaign to a standard campaign if you prefer to show it on other devices.

OptinMonster makes it easy to convert abandoning visitors on any device type using our powerful Exit-Intent technology. Show your campaign at the precise moment a visitor decides to leave your site.

In this article, you’ll learn how to activate Exit-Intent in OptinMonster.

Before you start, this feature is available with a Pro and higher subscription.

Important:

Exit-Intent cannot be configured for Inline type campaigns because they are displayed within the page content, not as a popup or overlay.

If you intended to create a poup campaign for Exit-Intent you can change your Inline campaign to another type easily!

Exit-Intent cannot be used with Inline campaigns.

Exit-Intent is one of our most effective campaign triggers, easily increasing conversions by 2x or more.

Configure Exit-Intent

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you can rapidly increase conversions by triggering it to appear using Exit-Intent.

To activate Exit-Intent, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, when adding or editing a rule select When (Triggers) from the left-hand list and select the Exit-Intent option.Exit-Intent rule in OptinMonster.
  3. Configure Exit-Intent to indicate which devices and the sensitivity you would like to use.Exit-Intent options.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

How does Exit-Intent Work?

OptinMonster’s Exit-Intent Technology works by triggering a campaign when a visitor’s behavior indicate they intend to navigate away from your site. Those behaviors are different on mobile and desktop devices and are determined by the Sensitivity setting.

Desktop

On desktop devices, exit-intent is triggered when a visitor’s mouse motions towards the browser bar, a clear indication they’re about to leave.

When your exit-intent display rule is targeted to desktop devices OR all devices, the Sensitivity for visitors on desktop devices correlates to a specific pixel value on the sides of the browser window. When the visitor is that many pixels away from exiting the browser window with their mouse, the campaign will be triggered to appear. The pixel value for each setting is as follows from the sides of the browser window:

  • Low: 1 pixel
  • Medium: 50 pixels
  • High: 150 pixels

Mobile

Since there is no mouse to target on mobile devices, we look for other behaviors that indicate a visitor is about to leave: quickly scrolling up the page, and/or *clicking the back button.

When your exit-intent display rule is targeted to mobile devices or all devices, the Sensitivity for visitors on mobile devices determines which of those actions (or both) we look for. The default is Medium.

  • Low or Medium: triggers when the user scrolls up the page.
  • High: *attempts to trigger when the user clicks the back button OR scrolls up the page (whichever happens first).

*The attempt to trigger when the user clicks the back button is not guaranteed because some browsers may block this behavior.

OptinMonster makes it easy to trigger a campaign to popup with the click of a link or button on your site. Create a 2-step optin campaign from any link on your site using our MonsterLink™ feature.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create a MonsterLink™ to show a campaign with the click of a button or link.

Before you start, this feature is available with a Pro and higher subscription.

  • MonsterLink™ cannot be configured for Inline type campaigns.
  • A MonsterLink™ will ignore all other Display Rules configured and always show the campaign when the MonsterLink™ is selected.
  • A MonsterLink™ is one of our most effective campaign triggers, easily increasing conversions by 2x or more.

Configure MonsterLink

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you can rapidly increase conversions by triggering it to appear using a MonsterLink™.

To create a MonsterLink™, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, when adding or editing a rule select When (Triggers) from the left-hand list and select the MonsterLink™ option.
    MonsterLink rule in OptinMonster.
  3. You’ll be provided with a sample HTML link you can click to copy.
    MonsterLink copy link.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Add MonsterLink

Once you’ve created a MonsterLink™, you’ll want to add it to your website.

You can find the MonsterLink™ code to add to your site from:

  1. Within the Display Rules screen next to the MonsterLink™ rule you configured in the previous section of this article.
    MonsterLink copy link.
  2. Alternatively, from the Publish screen in the campaign builder within the Click to Load tab.
Copy the MonsterLink sample code from the Publish screen of the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Place the MonsterLink™ code within your site content where you wish to have it appear.

WordPress Required Step

IMPORTANT:

When the MonsterLink rule is activated, all of your other rules will be turned off within that individual Ruleset (e.g. page-targeting, time delay, Exit-Intent, etc). This is because the MonsterLink popup will only show if the MonsterLink is clicked. If you want to trigger the campaign via something else, like Exit-Intent, as well as the MonsterLink, you’ll need to create and configure a second Ruleset.

If you are using the WordPress OptinMonster WordPress plugin, please follow these steps to ensure you can add your MonsterLink™ anywhere on your site:

  1. Navigate to the WordPress Admin Dashboard > OptinMonster screen and confirm the campaign you’ve configured to appear by MonsterLink™ is set to Published status.
Set the MonsterLink Status to Published in the OptinMonster WordPress plugin
  2. Within the Output Settings for the same campaign, ensure all Advanced Output Settings are disabled.
Configure the Output Settings for your campaign in the WordPress plugin.

Example Configuration

You can add a MonsterLink™ as a text link, button link, or even a clickable image. The following are examples of each to help you get started.

You can copy and paste any of the following examples, but please be sure to edit the MonsterLink™ URL to match that of your specific campaign.

Text MonsterLink

This text MonsterLink™ is an example of adding the MonsterLink™ as text on your page and uses the default MonsterLink™ code.

Button MonsterLink

Very similar implementation to the text link, but this time you use it to make a button. The default button design depends on your CSS on your site.

You may need to replace the class “button” with your own theme-specific class. Some themes use button as a class while others use alternative naming conventions. Refer to your theme’s documentation for information about button classes.

Image MonsterLink

In this example, we’ll place an image inside of our MonsterLink™ instead of text to trigger the campaign to appear when the image is selected.

Show a Different Campaign on Mobile

In this example, we’ll show one campaign on Desktop / Tablet devices and a different campaign on Mobile devices using the data-mobile-slug attribute.

Dynamic MonsterLinks

Need to add the same MonsterLink to several areas of a page? You can dynamically add MonsterLinks targeting a specific ID, Class, or other selector in the HTML.

To dynamically add MonsterLinks to your page, follow these steps:

  1. Below we provide two examples of Javascript to accomplish your goal. Choose the most appropriate example for how you wish to target the link(s) on your site.
  2. Update the code to indicate the specific link element you wish to set as a MonsterLink AND add your campaign’s MonsterLink URL.
  3. Next, add the Javascript directly to your website to all pages where it should add dynamic MonsterLinks.

FAQs

Can I split-test a MonsterLink™?

Yes, you can Split-Test a MonsterLink™.

Be sure to copy the MonsterLink™ for the primary campaign in your split-test.

If you change which campaign is the primary in your split-test be sure to update the MonsterLink™ on your site to use the new primary.

Can I have one campaign for desktop users and another campaign for mobile/tablet users on the same MonsterLink™?

Yes! To do this you’ll use the data-mobile-slug attribute to add the campaign you wish to show on Mobile devices. Like this:

Can all campaign types be made into a MonsterLink™?

All popup-type campaigns can be made into a MonsterLink™, e.g. Lightbox, Fullscreen, Floating Bar, and Slide-in.

Inline campaigns, which don’t pop up but rather show in the page’s content, cannot be made into a MonsterLink™.

Can I create a landing page where people can signup for my Campaign?

Yes! This can be done using our Shareable MonsterLink™ feature.

Can I create a MonsterLink from a non-link (a) tag?

Yes, to accomplish this be sure to add class="om-monster-link" to the HTML element you’re creating a MonsterLink from. For example:

Troubleshooting

In WordPress, why does the MonsterLink™ show up as code on the page?

Be sure to add your MonsterLink™ using the text editor and not the visual editor.

If you’re using Gutenberg, you’ll want to add a Custom HTML block.

OptinMonster makes it easy to recover abandoning website visitors and turn them into subscribers and customers. Our InactivitySensor™ feature allows you to grab the attention of disengaged and abandoning visitors on any device (mobile, tablet, and desktops).

In this article, you’ll learn how to use OptinMonster’s InactivitySensor™ to trigger a campaign.

Before you start, this feature is available with a Plus and higher subscription.

InactivitySensor™ cannot be used with Inline campaigns.

InactivitySensor™ detects the lack of activity on your site (like scrolling, clicking, etc) and triggers your targeted campaign.

Configure InactivitySensor™

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you can capture abandoning leads by triggering it to appear using InactivitySensor™.

To enable InactivitySensor™ on your campaign, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, when adding or editing a rule select When (Triggers) from the left-hand list and select the InactivitySensor™ (Seconds of Inactivity) option.
    InactivitySensor rule in OptinMonster.
  3. Choose the operator from the dropdown and adjust the time in seconds as desired.
    InactivitySensor options.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Examples

The most effective way to use this rule is to target desktop and mobile users separately since mobile and desktop visitors behave differently. Study your Google Analytics data for your site and test your how many seconds of inactivity produce the best results for your site.

Mobile visitors often scroll while they are actively engaged on your site, Also, many phone screens will dim after 30 or 60 seconds of inactivity on their own, and you’ll want your campaign to show before that happens. You will want to set a short inactive time period for mobile devices, like the one below:

  • Visitor inactive time is at least 10 seconds
    AND
  • Visitor’s device is mobile

For desktop users, your delay may need to be longer, as visitors’ monitors will not automatically dim or close like a mobile phone is more likely to do. Your Display Rules would look like this:

  • Visitor inactive time is at least 60 seconds
    AND
  • Visitor’s device is desktop

FAQs

What’s the best way to use InactivitySensor™ to get more subscriptions?

We recommend the following:

  • Combine this rule using an OR condition with Exit-Intent to target users who get ready to leave OR stop browsing.
  • Create split tests so you can determine the best time of inactivity for your site or type of visitor, for the most impressions, and more importantly a higher conversion rate.
  • Set MonsterEffects and Sounds to catch your distracted visitor’s attention.
Is this the same as Mobile Exit-Intent?

No, InactivitySensor™ triggers a campaign when a certain amount of time has passed and the visitor has not taken any action.

Mobile Exit-Intent is a separate feature that triggers a campaign when a visitor actively scrolls up on a mobile device, or clicks the browser “Back” button, depending on the rule’s sensitivity settings.

OptinMonster makes it easy to trigger campaigns on a time delay. Set a campaign to show immediately when a visitor arrives to your site or a specific page, or delay the appearance of a campaign to allow visitors to browse the site first.

In this article, you will learn how to use the “time on page” and “time on site” Display Rules in OptinMonster.

Configure Time Delay Display Rule

The time delay rules let you display your campaign based on how long the visitor has spent on a page on your site or on the site itself. When the page loads, it starts a timer and it triggers the campaign when the timer reaches the seconds you set in the settings.

To display a campaign on a time delay, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Next, when adding or editing a rule select When (Triggers) from the left-hand list and select the Time on Page or Time on Site option.
    • Time on Page will trigger this campaign when a visitor has spent a certain amount of time on a page on your site.
Time on Page rule in OptinMonster.
    • Time on Site will trigger this campaign when a visitor has spent a certain amount of total time on the site, regardless of how many pages have been visited during that time.
Time on Site rule in OptinMonster.
  3. Configure the chosen rule using the fields provided.
    Time on Page options.
    OR
    Time on Site options.
  4. When you are finished, Save the campaign.
