By default, all OptinMonster campaigns appear on all devices. But we’ve made it super simple to create campaigns that appear ONLY on mobile devices using these templates specifically designed to convert better for mobile users.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create a campaign that appears only on mobile phones using one of our mobile-only templates.

Before you start, this feature is available with a Pro and higher subscription.

Before you start, mobile-only templates will show on mobile phones by default with no option to show them on other devices.

Before you start, while mobile-only templates are designed just for mobile, you can target any other campaign to be shown on specific devices using our Device Targeting display rule.

Create Mobile-Only Campaign

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you can optimize the design and target only mobile traffic on your site using our mobile templates.

To create a mobile-only campaign, follow these steps:

  1. From the Campaigns screen, select the Create New Campaign button.
Select the Create New Campaign button to get started in OptinMonster.
  2. From the modal, select Templates as the type of campaign you’d like to create.
Select Templates from the popup modal to begin selecting a campaign template in OptinMonster.
  3. On the next screen, once you’ve selected the Campaign Type, filter the templates available using the Device: Mobile Specific (Optimized) option.
Mobile optimized template filter in the OptinMonster campaign creation screen allows you to see only mobile templates.
  4. Choose the template you wish to use for your campaign and proceed with creating your campaign as usual.
  5.  Your new mobile campaign will show only on mobile phones with no option to target other devices.

Convert to Mobile-Only

You can also convert any existing campaign to be mobile-only.

To convert a campaign to mobile-only, follow these steps:

  1. In the campaign builder, select the Campaign Details in the bottom footer bar.
The campaign details inside the builder.
  2. A popup modal will appear where you can enable Mobile Campaign.
Enable Mobile Campaign in the campaign details.
  3. Once applied, your campaign will update to appear within the bounds of a mobile phone preview in the builder, like this:
Mobile preview of campaign in the builder.
  4. When you’re finished, Save your campaign.
  5. Your campaign will now show only on mobile phones by default.

FAQs

Can I convert a mobile-only campaign back to a standard campaign?

Yes! Just follow the steps in the previous section, toggling the Mobile Campaign option off and saving the change. Please note that you may need to edit the campaign’s design to fit your needs after converting to or from mobile-only.

Do I have to have a campaign specifically for mobile traffic?

Not at all. If it better fits your workflow and goals you can instead create a standard campaign. If your campaign is not mobile-only, it will show on all devices by default and you can use the Display Rules to target the campaign to Desktop, Tablet, and/or Mobile Phone.

We typically recommend creating a separate campaign just for mobile visitors so you can better control the design on small devices and track the conversion rate specific to mobile traffic.

How do I stop my campaign for Desktop traffic from also showing on Mobile?

You can control which devices your standard campaigns appear on using the Display Rules.

Troubleshooting

Why does my campaign design look weird after I’ve converted it?

You may need to adjust the campaign design after converting to or from mobile-only. This is not necessary if you create a mobile-only campaign from the start and do not convert because the design is already optimized for small screens.

Our pre-made mobile optimized templates use a single-column layout since this is best for small screens. The campaign you wish to convert to mobile may have a template with two or more columns.

Before you convert a campaign, we recommend you add a single column to the campaign, move all content within that column, and remove the previous multi-column block before proceeding.

This will ensure there is no unexpected whitespace above, below, or between elements in your campaign once converted to mobile-only.

Why is my campaign not showing in Safari’s private browsing mode?

If your campaign is not showing in Safari’s private browsing mode and your site has the OptinMonster embed code loaded via Google Tag Manager (GTM), it is likely due to Apple’s new Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection, which is enabled by default in Safari’s private browsing mode on iOS 17.

This protection appears to block Google Tag Manager, preventing the OptinMonster embed script from loading and causing campaigns to fail to display. You can Reduce Protections in a private browsing tab, and your OptinMonster campaigns should appear as Google Tag Manager is unblocked.

To avoid this issue, we recommend adding your OptinMonster global embed code directly to your site. This approach bypasses Safari’s privacy restrictions entirely and ensures campaigns will load, even when the default protections are enabled.

Troubleshooting

My Floating Bar campaign is sitting on top of the header / navigation of my site instead of pushing it down.

The default behavior for the Floating Bar campaign is to push the page content down when the campaign is positioned at the top of the browser.

If you’re seeing the Floating Bar overlay your page content instead of at the top, it’s likely that your site’s theme or styling is interfering with the natural behavior of the campaign. For example, if your site has a sticky header or navigation bar this can result in the campaign overlaying that sticky header or navigation bar.

This can be addressed by adding the following Javascript code directly to your site. Be sure to update the code as mentioned in the comments:

How To Prevent the Floating Bar from Scrolling Down along with Scrolling Webpage

Just add this CSS snippet to the campaign to achieve this:

Troubleshooting

I’m having trouble closing my Slide-In campaign on mobile devices.

Visitors may have difficulty accessing the close button on a Slide-In campaign if the content in the campaign causes the campaign to be taller than the available screen space. This is because Slide-In campaigns are always anchored to the bottom of the browser screen, rather than floating in the middle of the screen like a popup campaign.

If this is happening with your Slide-In campaign, we recommend adding the “Visitor’s Device” Display Rule to exclude showing the campaign on mobile devices. Then, use a Mobile Optimized Popup which can be scrolled to view all content if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Impressions (Visitors) counted for Inline campaigns in my analytics reports?

An Inline campaign’s impression is counted when the campaign visually appears within the browser window to your visitor.

If the campaign is placed below the fold of your site the visitor will need to scroll the campaign into view before an impression is counted.

Troubleshooting

I’ve added the OptinMonster Global Embed code to my site but my Inline campaign isn’t showing up.

You’ll want to be sure to place the Inline campaign’s embed code directly within your page content where it should appear to your visitors. This is required even if you’ve already added the Global Embed Code to your site.

Follow our guide for embedding Inline campaigns on your site.

Why does my Inline campaign’s design appear squished on the page?

Inline campaigns will automatically stretch to fit the width of the content area they are embedded within.

If you’re embedding the campaign within a narrower block of content on your site than the campaign appears in the builder it can cause significant visual differences between the two views.

We recommend you adjust the max-width of the campaign in the builder to more closely resemble the size of the block you will be embedding the campaign in on your site. This will make it easier to adjust the design to fit how it will appear on your site.

Why am I missing some Display Rules for my Inline campaign?

Inline campaigns will visually appear when the page is loaded and cannot be configured to use conditions like Time Delay, Scroll Percentage, Exit-Intent, InactivitySensor or MonsterLink to trigger their appearance. Those options will not be available when setting the Display Rules for your Inline campaign.

Troubleshooting

My campaign looks bad and is squished when I view it on my site, why?

Our Inline campaigns can be embedded in many different content areas of your site. If you’ve embedded the campaign in a content area with a very narrow width, like the sidebar of a page, you may need to adjust the design to better fit the content area it will appear in.

In the campaign builder, you can adjust the max-container width to more closely match the width of the content area you’re planning to show the campaign in on your site. This will make it easier to customize the appearance to match how it will appear on your site.

Follow our guide to edit the campaign width.

FAQs

How can I create a spin-to-win campaign without capturing the email address?

The default configuration will require an email address be captured to spin the wheel in your gamified campaign. To spin the wheel without capturing any lead data, follow these steps:

  1. In the campaign builder, navigate to the Integrations view and confirm there are no Integrations present. If there are any, delete those now.
Delete all existing Integrations from the campaign builder in OptinMonster.
  2. Next, return to the Design view of the campaign builder and select the email field in your design to edit it.
  3. Toggle the eye icon option off, so the field will be hidden.
Hide the email field in OptinMonster.
  4. Next, add a dummy email address in the Default Value field.
    1. We Recommend: you use the following sample email address with the Smart Tag {{visit_timestamp}}, like this: youremail{{visit_timestamp}}@dummy.com
By using a Smart Tag to capture the unique timestamp for each entry you’ll receive an entry for each submission indicating which coupon code was won, if you would like to know how often each coupon has been awarded.
  5. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.
  6. The wheel will now spin when the button is selected without requiring the visitor enter their email address.
Can I use a Custom HTML integration to spin the wheel?

No, at this time, the campaign’s wheel can only be triggered to spin when using one of our native Integrations.

Is the winning Coupon Code sent to my Email Service Provider?

The winning coupon code is sent along with the lead data to the following platforms when using our native integration:

If you don’t see your Email Service Provider listed and would like to request this addition, please reach out to our customer support team for assistance.

Can I add a Coupon Wheel separately to any other campaign or type?

It’s impossible to manually add a coupon wheel element to a campaign that doesn’t already contain one.

However, if you’d like to create a coupon wheel campaign of a different campaign type (for example, a Floating Bar), you can change the campaign type once you’ve created the coupon wheel campaign.

Can I completely remove sections of the wheel, so they are not visibly displayed?

At this time, it’s not possible to entirely remove sections of the wheel.

You can disable sections so they will not be landed on. They will still be a visible part of the design, so we recommend you customize the text and design accordingly.
