Welcome to OptinMonster, the best lead generation software available for all types of websites! OptinMonster will help you increase your conversions and build your web presence.

In this article, we’ll introduce you to the major areas of OptinMonster’s interface and help you get started creating new campaigns quickly.

Campaign Dashboard

When you first log into your OptinMonster account, the screen that loads is called the Campaign Dashboard, which acts as your home screen. You can easily navigate back to this screen by clicking the Campaigns link in the top menu.

The Campaign Dashboard is where you’ll find all of your OptinMonster campaigns.

If you are just getting started, it may a little bare right now, but that will change as soon as you create your first campaign.

Any campaigns already created will be listed in the middle column with high-level conversion analytics for the past 30 days. You can quickly edit, create split-tests, and find your Campaign ID by clicking on a campaign’s title.

Account Dashboard

The Account Dashboard is where you can view lead data by time period and by site, as well as view your top performing campaigns and pages.

To access the Account Dashboard, click the “Dashboard” link in the top menu.

Account Settings

You can access your OptinMonster Account details by clicking on your user icon in the top menu.

A dropdown menu will open with the following options to manage your account. Some options may not appear based on your plan level or sub-account access permissions.

In-App Notifications

Sometimes we’ll share new updates, tips, sales, and more through in-app notifications. To view them, click the green message icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to open a list of all previous in-app messages you’ve received.

Support

If you need help, click the ? Support link from the top menu and an overlay will appear with the option to search our documentation or contact us for assistance.

Submit a Support Ticket

To submit a support ticket, click the “Get Help by Email” button. This will take you to our support page, where you can select your topic, any related campaigns, and the ticket will come straight to our inbox.

Using the support form while you’re logged-in will always speed up your reply time compared to submitting a ticket when you’re logged-out or when you email directly.

Create New Campaign

The final major item on the home Dashboard screen is the Create Campaign button. Selecting this button allows you to begin creating a new campaign.

OptinMonster’s drag-and-drop builder makes it super simple to create beautiful campaigns for your website without needing a web developer.

This overview will cover the major views, the vital sub-menus, and everything you’ll need to get started.

Design View

OptinMonster’s Design View has been created with ease of use and customization in mind. The screen is separated into two major sections: live Preview and your selections of views on the right and your view-related menu and settings on the left.

  1. General Navigation Bar (top bar)
  2. Blocks and Settings (left pane)
  3. Live Preview (right pane)
  4. Control Toolbar (bottom footer)
Campaign Builder sections.

Live Preview

In the live preview Area, you can point-and-click any area you’ve added blocks (more on that below) so that you can edit the wording (aka: “copy”) of your campaigns. This can mean changing an image, a tagline, the placeholder value for the fields, and more. When you click on the block, the menu on the left will update so that you can make your changes.

Blocks and Settings

In the left panel you’ll find blocks you can add to your campaign, and the configuration settings available for individual elements as you customize the design.

Control Toolbar

Campaign Settings

The Control Toolbar contains the campaign settings link. Select the gear icon to open the Campaign Settings in the left pane of the builder.

Open the campaign settings from the footer toolbar in OptinMonster.
Basic Tab
Basic campaign settings.
Advanced Tab
Advanced campaign settings.

Mobile Preview

Want to see how your design will look on small mobile screens? Toggle the Mobile Preview option in the Control Toolbar.

Mobile preview in OptinMonster's campaign builder.

Undo / Redo

You can also Undo or Redo actions from the Control Toolbar in the builder.

Undo button in the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Import View

You can import designs from another view or campaign using the Import View option in the Control Toolbar.

Import view button in the campaign builder.

Campaign Views

In the Control Toolbar at the bottom of the screen, you’ll find the options to switch between campaign views (Yes/No, Optin, Success).

Change campaign views in the builder.
  • Yes/No – When using the Yes/No view, this type of campaign is also commonly called a 2-Step Campaign. These can be used to show a Yes Button, which when clicked shows a Optin Form (i.e.: the “Optin View” below) or it could have another functionality like redirecting a user to another page. Learn more about Yes/No campaigns here.
  • Optin – The Optin View is normally used to show your optin form, collecting at least an email address. This view can also be used with Custom HTML integration instead where you can include specialized forms or other content.
  • Success – This view is normally shown after someone successfully signs up on your optin form when connected via OptinMonster’s native Integrations.

Switch Campaigns

Want to quickly switch to another campaign to edit its design? Select the Switch Campaign button in the Control Toolbar to search for and select the campaign you wish to switch to.

Switch Campaign option in the builder allows you to open a different campaign to edit quickly.

Campaign Details

Want to edit the Campaign Name, add or edit Notes, change the Campaign Type, assign to a Folder, or enable Mobile-Only? Select the Campaign Details option in the Control Toolbar to access those options.

The campaign details inside the builder.

A popup modal will open for you to edit the Campaign Details.

Edit the OptinMonster campaign details from the popup modal.

Display Rules View

A campaign has “rulesets” and “rules.” A single ruleset can include ” AND ” and “OR” rules.

Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Under the Display Rules View, there are two main sections:

Rulesets

A ruleset is a collection of “AND / OR” rules that must be met for a campaign to show. You can create multiple rulesets or have just one. Whenever the rules within a single ruleset “pass” (are valid / true), then the campaign will show.

Rules

Rules exist inside of a ruleset. These are the conditions that must be met when a visitor is on your website before a campaign can appear on their screen. This can be a time delay, Exit-Intent, the web visitor going to a specific page, or more!  The rules found in the Display Rules View are described in full detail in our display rules guide.

Integrations View

OptinMonster offers three types of integrations, our Native Integrations, Monster Leads, and Custom HTML.

Integrations view of the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Native Integrations

Native integrations are the integrations where OptinMonster has used the APIs of specific email service providers (ESPs) or customer relationship management (CRM) systems to allow a more fluid, list-building experience. Once you select your ESP from the menu and connect it with OptinMonster for the first time, you can seamlessly connect future campaigns with your list.

Native integrations allow you to collect name, email, and phone number. Some integrations’ APIs offer additional lead options.

Monster Leads

Monster Leads is OptinMonster’s “in-house” way to collect and store new leads gathered from an OptinMonster campaign. If you do not yet have an ESP to integrate with, you can use Monster Leads in the meantime. Or, use Monster Leads as a backup to your current ESP.

Each new campaign is connected to Monster Leads by default, which also allows you to collect name, email, and phone number.

Custom HTML

You can alternatively add a custom form to any OptinMonster campaign using our Form Embed Block, instead of configuring an Integration. This is a great option if we don’t have a direct integration with your Email Service Provider, or our integration doesn’t support the specific functionality you require.

Analytics View

OptinMonster offers our own built-in analytics tracking with no setup required. You can also connect to Google Analytics for more in-depth tracking, but this is optional.

Analytics view of the OptinMonster campaign builder.

You can see the total number of campaign impressions, conversions, and conversion rate for each of your campaigns on the OptinMonster campaign dashboard, or click the “View Analytics” icon above a campaign to see more information.

Publish View

The Publish View contains a lot of helpful information you’ll need while getting your campaign live on your site.

The publish status will appear in the top navigation menu of the campaign builder.

Status

Campaigns can be one of two statuses: Paused or Live. Paused campaigns will not show anywhere. Live campaigns can show on websites if the embed code is present, and the Display Rule conditions are met.

Website(s)

This field will contain the website(s) where you would like this campaign to show when published. At least one site is required for the campaign to appear, but you can add multiple websites where a campaign has permission to load.

It is common for development or testing sites to be sub-domains of the main domain. Therefore, if you have a test site, you would want to have your test site and your live site both assigned to the campaign.

Preview

You can preview the design of your campaign before you launch it. Access the preview option from the Publish screen, following our guide.

Platforms

You can find your OptinMonster embed code options here. Some platforms, such as WordPress or Shopify, have customized solutions for adding the embed code to your website. However, we have a general, account-wide embed code that you can use to allow your campaigns to show on your website(s).

Embed Code

Once you click on your platform, any associated embed code will show below it. You can copy the code directly from this box to use on your site.

Support, Save, and Exit

There are 3 buttons on the top right of the builder.

Support, save, and exit buttons in the campaign builder.
  • Support – This button will show a popup listing common walk-through guides for using OptinMonster. Additionally, you can click here to submit a support ticket.
  • Save – This button must be clicked to make sure any changes to your campaign’s design or settings are saved for future use.
  • Exit – This button allows you to leave the builder and go back to your campaign dashboard. If you leave without saving, no changes made previously will be applied.

We’re so excited for you to begin publishing your OptinMonster campaigns! Use the checklist below to guide you through creating a campaign when you’re using the OptinMonster for WordPress plugin.

If you haven’t yet integrated OptinMonster with your WordPress website, we recommend using the OptinMonster for WordPress plugin to do that. Learn how to install the OptinMonster for WordPress plugin now.

Not using WordPress or the OptinMonster for WordPress plugin?

Please follow our general Getting Started checklist instead.

Create an OptinMonster campaign by following the sections below, let’s get started!

Create A Campaign

To get started creating a new campaign, choose one of the six Campaign Types and click Create New.

Select from one of the six campaign types.

Not sure which one to choose? Learn more about each campaign type: Popup, Floating Bar, Fullscreen, Inline, Slide-in, and Gamified Fullscreens (available only with a Growth subscription).

Next, browse the Templates available for that Campaign Type.

Browse templates

All OptinMonster templates appear on all devices and look great on every device. With a Pro or Growth subscription, you can also choose templates designed specifically for mobile devices by adjusting the Device Targeting filter.

You can preview any template by hovering over it and clicking Preview.

When you’ve found a template you like, select Use Template.

Select a template for your campaign.

Name your campaign and click Start Building.

Name your campaign.

Plan The Success Action

Before you start designing your campaign, it’s important to keep in mind the overall goal of your campaign. What action do you want visitors to take when they see your campaign? Subscribe to your email list? Visit a page on your website? Download a file? Your goals determine the content of your campaign.

What happens after a visitor clicks a button in your campaign, or converts an optin form, is controlled by the Success Action of the buttons or forms in your campaign.

Success Actions can be adjusted by clicking on any button or form within your campaign.

You can choose from the following Success Actions:

  • Show a View (Yes/No, Optin or Success View)
  • Close the campaign
  • Close campaign and refresh the page
  • Redirect to a URL
  • Open in a new Window (buttons elements only)

In this example, we’re going to assume you want to show your visitor an optin form, then a thank you message after they complete that form. Learn more about Success Actions here.

Design Your Campaign

When you first enter the builder to edit your new campaign, you’ll see the drag and drop editor in the Design tab. This is where you’ll edit the text, images, buttons and forms in your campaign.

We recommend following our guide to create your first campaign which provides a full walk-through of the campaign builder settings.

Configure Output Settings

After you close the campaign, you’ll be directed to the Output Settings for this campaign in your OptinMonster for WordPress plugin. You can further target where your campaigns appear using the Advanced Settings.

Configure the output settings.

Remember that your campaign must meet all of the conditions in your Display Rules, as well as the conditions you select in the Output Settings before it can appear.

In the screenshot above, the Display Rules allow the campaign to appear on any page of the site after 5 seconds. However, within the Output Settings, it is set to display only on Posts, so the campaign can appear on any page of the site that is a Post.

Publish The Campaign

When you’re done configuring your Output Settings, you’re ready to publish your campaign live to your site.

Under Visibility and Status, select who should see the campaign (all visitors, or only logged in visitors).

Then, change the status from Draft to Published, and click the green Save Changes button.

Select Publish from the status dropdown.

Congratulations! Your campaign is now live on your site!

What Next?

Your campaign is now appearing on your site. Visitors are either seeing it and converting it (YAY!) or seeing it and closing it without taking an action.

How often the campaign appears again after it has been seen or converted is controlled by the campaign’s Cookies. By default, all campaigns display again after 30 days if closed, but not converted. They appear again after 365 days if the campaign is converted.

You may want to adjust those cookies to better suit your goals.

Learn how to adjust the Cookies that determine how often a campaign can show to visitors.

When you’re ready to take your campaign to the next level consider implementing some of these features:

Split Testing

Split testing your campaign helps you improve conversions by testing different colors, copy, configuration settings and more.

MonsterLinks

You can show your campaign with the click of a link or button on your site with MonsterLinks!

Deliver Downloadable Files

Learn more about how to deliver downloadable content to subscribers when using OptinMonster.

Yes / No Campaigns

Use our Yes / No feature to add a two-step option to your campaign, or in place of collecting email addresses.

Welcome to OptinMonster! We’re excited to show you how simple it is to create your first campaign and start converting traffic into leads and customers!

In this article, you’ll learn how to create your first OptinMonster campaign.

Before you start, this guide shows how to create a Lightbox Popup campaign. If you’re interested in learning how to create other types of campaigns see our dedicated guides for: Fullscreen, Floating Bar, Inline, Slide-In, and Gamified campaigns.

Anywhere you see a question mark icon in the campaign builder, you can view more information about what that option controls or how to use a specific tool by clicking on the icon.

Create a Campaign

To begin using OptinMonster on your website to generate leads you’ll want to create a campaign.

To create a new campaign, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your OptinMonster account at https://app.optinmonster.com
  2. Next, from the Campaigns screen, select the Create New Campaign button.
Select the Create New Campaign button to get started in OptinMonster.
  3. Select Popup as the campaign type. You’ll be shown the available templates for the Popup type campaign, choose one to begin building your campaign.
Select Popup as the campaign type
  4. Next, browse the Campaign Templates to locate one you would like to use. Once you find a campaign you’d like to use, select the Use Template button.
For this example, we will use the template Small Business Saturday.
Select the template you want to use in OptinMonster.
  5. Pro Tip: you can preview any template before you choose to use it by selecting the Preview button instead.
    Preview OptinMonster campaign template.
  6. On the next screen, give your new campaign a descriptive title and assign it to the site(s) you would like it to appear on then select the Start Building button.
    Start building your OptinMonster campaign.
  7. The campaign builder will now open with your new campaign, ready to be customized.
The OptinMonster Campaign Builder allows you to easily customize the design and functionality of your lead capture campaign.

Design Your Campaign

When you first enter the builder to edit your new campaign, you will see the Design view. This is where you can edit your campaign’s text, fields, and other elements. Check out our Builder Overview guide to learn more about the layout of the builder, and all of the settings available in the Design view.

The OptinMonster Campaign Builder allows you to easily customize the design and functionality of your lead capture campaign.

There are many ways you can customize your campaign. For this first campaign, we will keep things simple by only changing the text of the Optin and Success views to match your offer, and adjusting the optin fields and button. Once you know how to edit these elements, all other design elements work similarly, and you can create any design you like!

Edit Text

Use text elements in your campaign to make your offer to visitors, and tell them how to take action. Often, popup campaigns have a headline to catch the attention of the visitor, and then add body text to give more detail.

To edit the styling of your text (font style, weight, spacing, color, etc), highlight the text within any text block you would like to edit to make the text edit toolbar appear. Adjust any text styles you need.

Edit the text of your OptinMonster campaign.

You can add more text blocks to your campaign by returning to the home panel and dragging a text block into the campaign where you want it to appear.

Add a new text block to your campaign.

You can delete any unwanted block from your campaign by hovering over it and selecting the trash icon.

Delete block from the campaign design.

After changing the text in the campaign’s Optin view, let’s modify the Success view by selecting the Success button from the footer bar.

Change to the Success View in the campaign builder.

You can modify the Success view design the same way you edited the Optin view previously. If you’ve made significant changes to the design of the Optin view you would like to incorporate into the Success view you can import them into your Success view.

When you’re finished, return to the Optin view of your campaign.

Change to the Optin view in the campaign builder.

Edit Fields

You can use optin fields to gather lead information to send to your Email Service Provider.

OptinMonster’s native integrations allow you to collect Name, Email Address, and Phone Number. You can also add a Privacy Statement and checkbox.

IMPORTANT:

If you’re using a custom HTML integration, these form field options won’t be available. See our Custom HTML Integration guide for more details.

  1. From the Design view of the campaign builder, directly select the Optin Fields block to edit it.
Select the Optin Fields to edit their appearance.
  2. In the left sidebar, click on the pencil icon next to any field to edit the placeholder text, and styles.
Select the edit icon for your field to modify the settings.
  3. Select the Add New Field button to add a field that is not already part of the campaign.
*Learn more about adding extra fields to your campaign.
Add new field to your OptinMonster campaign.
  4. You can reposition the field by selecting the three vertical dots icon and dragging it into the order you prefer.
Drag to reposition the individual form fields in your OptinMonster campaign.
  5. If a field is present on your campaign that you do not want to use, click the trash icon next to it in the left sidebar to remove it. Note that the Email Field and Submit Button are always required.
Delete form field by selecting the trash icon.
  6. To change the form field styles select the Advanced tab in the sidebar panel and expand the Form Field Styling option.
Advanced form field styling options for your OptinMonster campaign.
  7. From the Content tab expand the Submit Button option to adjust basic settings for your button and control what action takes place when the form is submitted. You’ll find more options for the Submit Button in the Advanced tab as well.
    Submit button style options.
  8. Confirm that Conversion Tracking is enabled. This is what allows each click of the submit button to be counted as a conversion, so you can see how many visitors have completed your campaign.
Enable conversion tracking in the campaign builder to track form submissions.
  9. When you are finished, Save your campaign.
Save your OptinMonster campaign to ensure changes are not lost.

You’ve now edited the essential elements for your campaign’s design! You can move on to setting your Display Rules, or further customize the design of your campaign. These are some of the most popular changes users will make:

Display Rules

Next, you’ll use Display Rules to configure when, where, and for whom your campaign will appear on your site. To put it another way, the Display Rules are what trigger your campaign to show to visitors. There are countless display rule configurations you can create, and you can create simple or complex rulesets based on your own specific needs.

Learn how to start using the Display Rules.

Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.

Integrations

The Integrations View is where you will connect OptinMonster to your email service provider. In other words, this is how you make sure the leads you gather with your optin campaign get added to your email list!

Each new OptinMonster campaign is automatically connected to Monster Leads. Monster Leads is our “in house” lead storage system, which allows you to get started gathering leads if you don’t have an email marketing service set up yet. It’s also a great backup to your email service provider, just in case.

To connect your email integration, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Integrations option from the top menu.
Integrations view of the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. From here you can search for your Email Service Provider or locate it under the All Integrations section.
We connect with the most popular ESP platforms and provide guides for each integration here. You can also store leads within your OptinMonster account using Monster Leads. If you don’t see your ESP service available you can also use our Embed Form block to add a custom form, our Webhook integration, or Zapier integration.
  3. When you’ve finished connecting to your integration, Save the campaign.

Analytics

The Analytics View is where OptinMonster allows you to connect your campaigns to Google Analytics to view more advanced analytics data.

Analytics view of the OptinMonster campaign builder.

OptinMonster Analytics will automatically track basic analytics data (impressions, conversions, and highest-converting pages). You can also optionally connect your OptinMonster campaign to Google Analytics for more advanced reporting.

Publish the Campaign

The Publish View is where you will do a final review of all the details of your campaign, and publish it to your site! When you create a new campaign, it’s “paused” by default, and will not appear on your site. When you are ready, you will publish it, or send it to your website, allowing it to appear for visitors who trigger it.

To publish your campaign, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Publish View from the top menu.
Select the Publish item from the top menu in OptinMonster's campaign builder.
  2. From the Publish View, you can do a final check to make sure that your campaign is ready to go. The Campaign Publish Summary provides a helpful checklist of items to review.
The Publish Summary in OptinMonster covers important integration and configuration options.
Any grey circles next to items indicate an item is not yet configured. This does not immediately indicate a problem if you intend to leave certain options not configured. We recommend evaluating each option any time you create a new campaign before publishing it.
Items that have not yet been configured.
  3. You can also use the Preview and Live Site Inspector features from the Publish View to evaluate and test your campaign before publishing it. See our dedicated guide here for a full walk-through.
    OptinMonster testing features for campaigns.
  4. When you are ready, click Publish to make your campaign live.
    Publish your OptinMonster campaign.
  5. Finally, Save your campaign.

If you have not yet added the OptinMonster embed code to your site or activated our WordPress plugin, then you have one more important step to take.

OptinMonster makes adding your campaigns to your site easy by giving you flexibility.

This article teaches you how to embed your OptinMonster campaigns on your site.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

Embed Campaigns

To embed your campaigns, follow these steps:

  1. From the Publish view of the campaign builder, locate the Platform section, and you’ll find multiple embed options.
Publish screen platform options for embedding your OptinMonster campaign.
  2. After copying the Global Embed Code or the Campaign Embed Code, you can paste it into your site. We recommend adding it just before the closing </body> tag in the page code. If you are adding an Inline type campaign, you’ll need to place the embed code within the page content where you want it to visually appear. See our guide for embedding Inline campaigns.

Recommended:

See our platform specific guides as well as our general guide to loading OptinMonster on any website for more detailed instructions.

Publish Campaign

Once you’ve embedded OptinMonster on your site, you’ll want to publish your Campaign so it can appear to visitors.

To publish your Campaign, follow these steps:

  1. From the Publish view of the campaign builder, locate the Publish Status section and select the Publish button.
Publish Status in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. Once your Campaign is Published you’ll see the new status reflected in the top menu bar.
The publish status will appear in the top navigation menu of the campaign builder.
  3. When you’re finished, click Save.
  4. To pause your Campaign you can always change the status back to Draft from the Publish screen.

Troubleshooting

What domain do I enter when creating my Campaign?

You’ll want to add the domain that appears in the address bar when you view your website.

If you haven’t registered the domain you want to use in your OptinMonster account yet, you can add the site through the Publish screen in the campaign builder, or through the Account > Sites screen. Learn more about how to register your domain in OptinMonster.

  1. In the Publish view of the campaign builder, be sure the domain is listed under the Websites section. Click Add a website if your domain isn’t already assigned to the Campaign to select and add it.
  2. When you’re finished, click Save.
What’s the difference between the Account-wide and Campaign Specific embed codes?

You may find a specific purpose for each version of embed code to best fit your workflow:

Global Embed: The Global Embed code only needs to be added once to allow all campaigns that are configured to load on the specific domain to appear. This embed code can save significant time as there is no need to update it when you want to replace or remove a campaign. Simply Draft or Delete the Campaign within your OptinMonster account and that change will be immediately reflected on your website.

Campaign Embed: The Campaign Embed code is unique to the individual Campaign and must be added everywhere you want that Campaign to appear. If you wish to embed multiple campaigns across your site and are using the Campaign Embed you will need to add the unique embed code for each Campaign where you want that Campaign to load. If you want to replace or remove a campaign you must manually edit the embed code present on your site.

I’m using the Global Embed, how do I control where my Campaign can appear?

You will want to use the Display Rules in the campaign builder to configure where and how your campaign loads.

I’m using the Global Embed but my Inline Campaign isn’t appearing.

With the Global Embed option it’s necessary to add the HTML placeholder code within the page content where you want your Inline Campaign to visually appear.

You can find the HTML placeholder code on the Publish screen above the Global Embed code for your individual Inline campaigns.

Inline Embed Code
Does the embed code have to be pasted before the closing body tag?

No, you can add the embed code anywhere within the body of your site, however, there is no reason to add the Campaign further up the page for popup type campaigns. Since the Campaign doesn’t load until the rest of your site has loaded we recommend adding the embed code for any popup type campaign just before the closing </body> tag.

OptinMonster uses cookies to control how often your campaigns appear to visitors.

In this article, you’ll learn how the campaign and global cookies work and how to set cookies for your campaigns.

Before you start, OptinMonster uses cookies to determine when a campaign was shown to a visitor, closed, and successfully converted. Using that information we can then hide or show the campaign again at a later date.

A cookie is a small file stored on your computer that provides information.

Campaign cookies control the individual campaign you’re editing.

Global cookies control all campaigns on your site and can be used to override the campaign cookies.

Edit Campaign Cookies

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster you can choose how often the campaign appears to visitors by configuring the campaign cookies.

To configure campaign cookies, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Display Rules view in the campaign builder.
Navigate to the Display Rules in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  2. From the Actions tab of the Ruleset you’re editing, locate the Cookie Settings section.
Campaign cookies in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
The following Cookie Settings are available to configure:
    • Conversion cookie (if it is converted, show it again…)
    • Interaction cookie (if it is closed, but not converted, show it again…)
    • MonsterChains cookie (remember a visitor who has seen this campaign…)
    • Cross Subdomain Cookie
    • Smart Success for Inline type campaigns
  3. Adjust the cookie settings as desired.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Campaign Cookie Options

The Conversion, Interaction, and MonsterChains cookie settings will allow you to choose from the following options:

  • after x days (default setting): the campaign will not appear again until the number of days set has passed. A day consists of 24 hours.
  •  on their next visit to the site: this setting uses session cookies to show the campaign only on the next visit to the site.
We estimate that a regular user session / interaction lasts around 20 minutes and use this as the minimum time that must pass before the visitor can be exposed to the same campaign again.
When testing this setting, wait 20 minutes after interacting with or converting the campaign, then retest.
  • any time the display rules are met: this setting will allow the campaign to appear repeatedly as long as the Display Rules are met.
  • never, or until browser cookies are cleared: this setting will set a cookie in the browser that does not expire, to hide the campaign forever or unless the visitor clear’s their browser cookies.

Global Cookies

Global cookies are specific to a registered site in your account and control all campaigns embedded on that site.

To configure global cookies, follow these steps:

  1. From the OptinMonster Dashboard, navigate to My Account through the user icon in the top-right corner of the page.
    Click on Account Name
  2. Next, select Sites from the sub-navigation.
    Choose Sites From Menu
  3. On the Sites screen, locate the site you want to configure global cookies for and select the Edit button.
    Choose Edit Button
  4. On the site edit screen, you’ll be able to configure the global cookies.
    Global Cookie Settings

Global Cookie Options

When configuring Global Cookies you’ll find the following options available:

  • Global Interaction Cookie: this cookie is set after any campaign on your site has been closed by the visitor. Once this cookie is set no campaigns will appear on your site for the visitor until the cookie expires.
  • Global Success Cookie: this cookie is set after any campaign is successfully converted. Once this cookie is set no campaigns will appear on your site for the visitor until the cookie expires.

To disable either cookie option, set the number of days to zero (0).

Examples

The following is an example of how you can use the Campaign Cookie and Global Cookie options together.

  • Campaign cookies: after 1 days
  • Global Success Cookie: 90 days.

In this setup, you give the visitor an opportunity to convert through the campaign once-a-day. After the visitor has converted they won’t see any campaigns again for 90 days.

When to use Global Cookies

Global Cookies can be highly effective when all your campaigns promote the same offer or action across your website.

Imagine you run an eCommerce store with a site-wide promotion of 30% off. You have various campaigns on different pages (like fullscreen popups, floating bars, and inline campaigns), all offering the same discount.

By enabling Global Cookies, once a user interacts with one of these campaigns, they won’t see any of the other related discount campaigns. This helps to avoid overwhelming users with repetitive promotions while ensuring they get the best offer in one interaction.

FAQs

Are you showing the same campaign on a top-level domain and subdomain?

Check out our article on how to make campaign cookies persist across subdomains.

Where can I view all cookies OptinMonster uses?

See our Cookie List for details on how cookies are named and used.

What is the MonsterChains cookie setting for?

Can I hide all campaigns from existing subscribers?

Learn how to hide campaigns from existing subscribers.

Can I manually set OptinMonster Global cookies?

Yes, you can use Javascript to manually set Global cookies in the browser to hide all OptinMonster campaigns.

Add the following Javascript example directly to your website and update the expiration date as desired:

When should I use Global Cookies vs. Campaign Cookies?

You should use Global Cookies when all the campaigns on your site offer the same promotion.

On the other hand, If you’re running different campaigns for separate offers (like a free shipping campaign on one page and a discount offer on another), it’s better to use Campaign Cookies. This allows users to interact with each unique offer without interference.

While Global Cookies have their use cases, they’re not as commonly needed as they once were. Most users can achieve the same goals using campaign-specific cookies or organized campaign structures (like Folders and MonsterChains). These tools allow you to control which campaigns appear after a user interacts with a specific offer without losing the flexibility to launch a second or different offer.

Troubleshooting

I’ve changed the default cookie settings but the new settings aren’t working.

Be sure to test from a brand new Incognito window (aka private browsing session) OR manually clear the cookies from your browser before re-testing a campaign. This will ensure any previously set cookies are removed so the campaign can appear according to the new cookie settings you’ve saved.

My campaigns are reappearing in some browsers before the cookie expiration I set, why?

Some browsers now automatically remove first-party cookies after a specific period of time regardless of the expiration date set, like Safari and Brave.

We recommend you refer to Cookie Status for the latest details on how cookies are handled in individual browsers.
